Apparition of the spirit of Samuel to Saul at the house of the Witch of Endor, Salvator Rosa, 1668.
Quite possibly the last of his paintings before Rosa died in 1673.
One of my favourites from the Goetia, moreso for the gonzo visual nature of the demon than anything else. When I was very young I took a cursory look at that book in some sort of spiritual haze after my father died, looking for any kind of secret bullshit that may open some sort of communication with the dead. One of the demons named in the Goetia was said to be able to command the dead, but not this one. This one just looked neat. Buer would resurface years later as an enemy in a Castlevania game (Dawn of Sorrow?) and I very briefly adopted the name to record would become Salivating Lamb material.
